FOUR people suspected to be illegal immigrants and their driver cheated death by a whisker after a vehicle they were travelling in veered off the Sumbawanga – Kasanga Port Highway and overturned after its tire bust.
The road mishap occurred at Isofu area here in Sumbawanga Municipality while the car was over speeding.
The Rukwa Regional Police Commander (RPC), Ms Theophista Mallya told the ‘Daily News’ on Wednesday that all five people disappeared from the scene of accident to unknown places.
Narrating the incident, the RPC said the accident occurred on November 21, this year at around 11 hours at Isofu area
She said the accident involved a five seater Toyota Mark X heading to Sumbawanga town from Katavi region.
“The car was in high speed when suspicious officers manning a road block at Lyazumbi and Nkundi in Nkasi district in the region flagged them down, but the driver defied the order and zoomed past at a breakneck speed,” he said.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ms Mallya, the speeding car changed direction and headed towards Kasanga Port instead of Sumbawanga town.
“The speeding vehicle, when it was approaching Sumbawanga town at the roundabout, it changed direction and drove towards Matai township in Kalambo district, but veered off the road and overturned after one of its tire busted while the driver tried to escape from police officers,” she added
