Students motivated to study harder after visiting IIM-Z’bar  

ZANZIBAR: STUDENTS from various secondary schools in Zanzibar have been asked to embrace opportunities available at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM)-Zanzibar Campus to achieve the government’s objective of producing professionals in different fields.

This was highlighted by the acting Director, Department of Secondary Schools, Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Mr Mfaume Jaffar Mfaume when he talked to FV and FVI students from different schools who visited the newly opened IITM-Zanzibar, in the Unguja West B District.

He said the aim of inviting students in Advanced Secondary level is to motivate them and have some experience so that they study harder in science subjects to join the University to pursue the programs.

“We believe that the presence of the IITM-Zanzibar will make a difference by increasing scientists in data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Graduates from the University will help to move the country forward to achieve its development goals,” he explained.

Dr Umasankar Patra, one the lecturers at the IITM said they have introduced a unique programme in Zanzibar, called “Experience IIT Madras,” aimed to advertise and to show visitors, mainly students, opportunities that the institution offers, and the entire academic culture of the institution.

Our programme includes showing how students can find solutions in Mathematics and IT by using different methods including games.

“My message to our students is to help them understand that the main goal of this institution is preparing them to be leaders capable of solving various challenges in society, and surrounding them including lack of Jobs.”

Students such as Husna Amour, a Form Five student, who got the opportunity to visit the University at Bweleo village, expressed happiness for the visit which she said motivates them to study harder to be able to get good results to qualify to join the institution.

“IITM has a good environment that attracts students to learn by doing all things related to technology issues”, the student said urging more science students to visit the campus.

The institute, is the first to be established outside India and currently offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in IT.
