State vows on implementing WFP strategic goals

THE Minister of State, President’s Office, Public Service Management and Good Governance, George Simbachawene has said that the government is committed to ensure that the World Food Programme (WFP) five-year strategic goals of 2022-2027 plans are achieved.
Speaking in Dodoma yesterday during the WFP five-year strategic plan launch, Minister Simbachawene said the objective is to strengthen economic growth and development connected with people.
Mr Simbachawene, who represented the Minister of State, President’s Office (Policy, Parliament and Coordination) Jenista Muhagama, said that the strategy would enable the country to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are based in reducing poverty and bringing prosperity to people’s lives.
“This programme which will be implemented for five years shows that WFP has intended to ensure that they collaborate with the government to bring impetus to socio-economic development generally,” he said.
He called upon Ministries, Regions and Local Government Authorities (LGAs) that benefit from the implementation of the strategy to work closely with WFP to ensure that planned activities are implemented and contribute to improving people’s living conditions.
He noted that the implementation of this strategy should fully comply with the existing procedures governing cooperation between stakeholders and the government, including loans law, aid and guarantees between the government and development stakeholders (Development Cooperation Framework) managed by the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
He also called on the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government Tanzania (PO-RALG) to collaborate with WFP to coordinate, manage and ensure that the planned projects become sustainable and citizens are fully involved in the design, planning and implementation of various projects in the community.
“Leaders at regional level will establish a procedure to monitor and evaluate implementation to identify challenges and take immediate steps to correct emerging defects to enable WFP to see the best way to improve implementation of the interventions outlined in this strategic plan,” he said.
On her side, the WFP Representative, Sarah Gordon-Gibson explaining the role of this strategic plan said that WFP has planned to spend 363 million US dollars to implement various development projects based on the four elements of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF). She mentioned these elements as people, enabling environment, prosperity and the planet.
Ms Gibson said that through the 2022/2027 strategic plan, WFP aims to strengthen the implementation of strategies to deal with disasters before they occur as well as implement the Nutrition Program for the community and the School Feeding Program.
She added that this programme also aims to promote efforts to deal with climate change and the restoration of the environment, to raise small farmers as well as to provide humanitarian aid to refugees in the country.
“WFP will help small farmers by providing education on how to increase productivity, find markets for their products and enable them with post-harvest strategies before taking their products to the market” said Ms Gordon.
She also said that this strategic plan will enable the WPF to change the system of providing humanitarian aid and focus on stimulating development, investing in strategies to prepare in case disasters occur, strengthening development relationships based on humanitarian aid as well as strengthening food crops production.
