Starlink mobile launch extends connectivity to remote areas in Africa
KINSHASA: PEOPLE and organisations operating in remote areas of Africa are set to benefit from expanded access to essential communication services following the commercial launch of a satellite-to-mobile service in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Airtel Africa, in partnership with Starlink, launched the service on August 14, 2026, making the DRC the first country in Africa where Starlink Mobile has moved to commercial deployment.
The service enables Airtel customers with compatible smartphones to access connectivity in areas beyond the reach of conventional terrestrial networks, provided they have a clear view of the sky.
Starlink Mobile supports light-data applications, including WhatsApp messaging and SMS, without requiring specialised equipment or a separate device. The service is currently available on compatible LTE Android smartphones, while support for Apple devices is expected in the future.
The technology is expected to be particularly useful for transport and logistics operators, humanitarian organisations, health workers, farmers, mining operations and communities living beyond existing terrestrial network coverage.
It will also provide an additional layer of communication during emergencies, natural disasters and temporary disruptions to terrestrial networks.
The launch follows a strategic partnership between Airtel Africa and Starlink announced in December 2025, as well as successful testing of Starlink Mobile data and messaging services in Kenya in March 2026.
Speaking on the launch, Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar said the development marked a significant milestone for the company’s partnership with SpaceX, noting that combining Airtel’s terrestrial network with Starlink’s satellite technology would extend connectivity beyond the limits of conventional mobile infrastructure.
Airtel DRC Managing Director Theirry Diasnoma said the service would help address connectivity challenges arising from the country’s size and geography, particularly for people living, working and travelling beyond the reach of conventional mobile infrastructure.
Eligible customers can register through the MyAirtel App to receive free trial access for an introductory 30-day period. After the trial, customers will continue accessing Starlink Mobile through eligible Airtel data bundles.
Airtel Africa and Starlink are continuing to develop the service, with additional capabilities expected as the technology evolves and regulatory approvals are secured.
The launch represents a significant step in efforts to bridge Africa’s connectivity gap by combining conventional mobile infrastructure with satellite technology, particularly in remote and underserved areas where extending terrestrial networks remains challenging.
