Stakeholders urged to invest in sustainable tourism

ARUSHA: TOURISM stakeholders have been urged to channel more investment into sustainable tourism across different sectors of the industry to create jobs, foster cultural exchange and make significant contribution to the country’s GDP.

The call was made yesterday by the Rector of the Institute of Accountancy Arusha (IAA) Prof Elianami Sedoyeka, while officiating the opening of the Arusha International Tourism Conference and Expo (AITC) 2025 in Arusha.

With the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, Prof Sedoyeka said the conference challenges stakeholders to embrace environmentally and culturally friendly practices for the benefit of both present and future generations.

“This gathering is not only timely but historic, as it brings together local and global voices to discuss one of the most pressing issues of our time: sustainable tourism,” he said.

He stressed that the sustainability of the sector cannot be taken for granted, citing climate change, environmental degradation, over-tourism and loss of cultural heritage as urgent issues requiring the attention of policymakers, investors, researchers and communities.

Prof Sedoyeka said that the conference provides a platform to exchange best practices and explore solutions that balance environmental protection with economic benefits.

He assured that IAA remains committed to advancing tourism, not only as an academic discipline but also as a driver of national development. “We have invested in training, research and consultancy services that address real challenges in tourism, hospitality and sustainable development,” he said, adding that partnerships with government, the private sector and international actors ensure graduates are employable and prepared to lead innovations in the sector.

The Rector also highlighted inclusivity, noting that communities living near national parks and cultural sites must directly benefit from tourism revenues to foster ownership, pride and conservation.

On technology, he emphasised its role as a key driver of sustainable solutions, saying digital platforms can help manage visitors, reduce congestion, promote eco-friendly travel and showcase cultural heritage in innovative ways. He further called for clear policies and effective regulations to encourage responsible investment and safeguard natural and cultural assets.

On his part, Dr CRN Raphael, Senior Lecturer, Researcher and Consultant at the Tengeru Institute of Community Development, said tourism stakeholders must shift from traditional to modern practices by embracing digital technologies.

“The world is changing due to technology and globalisation. One of the most notable changes is digital transformation, which is reshaping tourism and hospitality as well as other sectors. One way to transform tourism and harness emerging opportunities is through adopting these technologies,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ms Caudence Ayoti, Founder and CEO of DeMi Tours Africa, said the conference provided a valuable networking platform, adding that her company is committed to mentoring and training women in the tourism industry.

Organised by IAA, the conference attracted about 200 participants.
