Stakeholders call for zero global nuclear tests

ACADEMICIANS and peace stakeholders in Mwanza have called for total ban of global nuclear test in efforts to promote peace and protect the world from massive destruction.

They made their call during the commemoration of the International Day Against Nuclear Tests that is observed annually on August 29 to raise awareness about the devastating effects of testing nuclear weapons.

Association of Catholic Universities and High Institute of Africa and Madagascar (ACUHIAM) Executive Secretary, Dr Gorge Mtalemwa said nuclear test is a threat to peace due to its harmful long lasting impact on environment, including water bodies, air, land and human being.

Dr Mtalemwa said the global moves should be on looking at the means of containing air pollution caused by carbon emission rather than on progressing rearming for nuclear test that endanger the possibility of sustainable peace with developing countries facing  the worse consequences.

“Nuclear test has no room in this era, if it happened by mistake several years ago then we need great changes in perspective so as to stop, developing country should not be attracted by nuclear technology test holders to engage in any production, there is no justification for nuclear weapon use in today’s world,” he warned.

Nsumba Secondary School history teacher and analyst, Mr Fredrick Ngeta urged the United Nations (UN) member states to enact good international policies, laws and enforcing machinery against nuclear tests, that will be backed by effective implementation worldwide since the threat to peace is the threat to life.

He also called for regular global workshops against nuclear tests as the means of boosting public awareness on nuclear tests demerits, putting on discussion about countries that breach international nuclear tests prevention laws so as to them accountable for their wrong doing.

A political analyst and sociologist, Mr Hamiduni Maliseli said the ongoing escalation of nuclear threat between Russia and Ukraine needs the global power such as the United States (US) and China, among others, to bring the two antagonistic parts on discussion that will lead to peaceful settlement.

He said any move to nuclear weapons use can result in to dangerous impact never seen before in history

“Disarmament is essential to all nations, the restriction should not be on the ant-west of pro-west only but all, we have to focus on technology that ends with positive results to all people and the continent at large” Maliseli noted.

According to the US Department of Energy‘s History of the Manhattan Project, on July 16, 1945, during World War II, the United States detonated the first world’s nuclear weapons known as trinity over the new Mexico Desert, and few months later it dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing more 100,000 people instantly, and from the same event thousands more died from their injuries, sickness caused by radiation and cancer in the years that followed.

Moreover, according to the Arms Control Association at least eight countries have carried out a total of 2056 nuclear test since 1945 with the US  conducting  half of all nuclear test, followed by Russia, France, United Kingdom, China  among others from which the North Korea is the most recent threatening nation to carry out a nuclear test.
