Speaker Zungu urges youth to shun divisive politics

DAR ES SALAAM: SPEAKER of the National Assembly, Mussa Zungu has urged Tanzanian youth to reject political mobilisation that could undermine peace and instead support local industries to drive economic growth through the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF).

Speaking during a promotional jogging event for the fair in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Mr Zungu said young people should not allow themselves to be used for political purposes at the expense of national peace and stability.

“Young people should not allow themselves to be exploited politically. Politics belongs in Parliament. Do not be used to advance the interests of others in ways that harm the country or your own families,” he said.

He called on Tanzanians, particularly the youth, to safeguard peace and contribute to economic growth by attending the trade fair and purchasing locally manufactured products.

Mr Zungu said the government had removed a range of taxes that previously hindered domestic manufacturers and traders.

He said the government’s broader policy of easing taxes on locally produced goods while increasing duties on selected imports aims to protect the country’s manufacturing sector and promote industrial growth.

Mr Zungu also said foreign companies participating in the trade fair were being encouraged to establish manufacturing plants in Tanzania, a move he said would create jobs and strengthen the economy.

According to him, the annual jogging event was organised to encourage consumers to embrace locally made products and challenge the perception that imported goods are superior.

He said Tanzanians should have greater confidence in locally produced food and clothing, noting that many domestic products meet high quality standards.

The Speaker also commended Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) Director General Latifa Khamis for overseeing preparations for the 50th anniversary of the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, which was first held in 1976.

Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade Denis Lazaro said the event also promoted healthy lifestyles, noting that a healthy population contributes to economic development.

He said the fair’s golden jubilee offers an opportunity to assess the country’s industrial progress and showcase the quality of locally manufactured products.

TanTrade Board Chairman, Ulingeta Mbamba thanked Mr Zungu and other officials for taking part in the event, saying it had helped promote both public health and awareness of the landmark edition of the trade fair.
