SOT, TAMHA screen ‘out of school’ athletics

Special Olympics Tanzania (SOT) in collaboration with Tanzania Mental Handicap Association (TAMHA) has conducted health screening to 16 ‘out of school’ athletes in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.
The initiative reached out 11 students from different nursing schools in the city who had an opportunity to administer the screening procedures.
Kelvin Mwise who is the project’s manager says it has been funded by Gorisano Foundations.
A dentist Sophia Mandari reveals that out of screened nine children, eight of them have been found with gum problems.
“We have urged their parents and guardians to desist from giving children sugary foods and ensure that they regularly brush their teeth,” she says.
On his part, Dr. Mwanandi Mwankemwa says there are five different health screening programs that Special Olympics Tanzania does to the members of the community.
Nuru Shida, who is a parent of Ismail Tabu requested parents of mentally challenged children not to abandon them but rather give them what they deserve as it is their responsibilities.
