Skip lunch, fill a classroom for our children

It’s time for us, the people, to roll up our sleeves, tighten our belts and of course pitch in to make our schools the kind of places that inspire future engineers, doctors, artists

TANZANIA: AS schools across Tanzania open their doors once again, we are reminded of the age-old challenge: overcrowded classrooms, shortage of textbooks and the notorious “standing desk” phenomenon (which, let’s be honest, is really just a fancy name for squatting!).

But here’s the good news: we don’t need to wait for the government alone to fix this. It’s time for us, the people, to roll up our sleeves, tighten our belts and of course pitch in to make our schools the kind of places that inspire future engineers, doctors, artists and maybe even the next president who, let’s face it, might also have to sit on the floor unless we act.

Let’s start by focusing on the basics. Every student deserves a desk, every classroom deserves chairs and every school deserves a well-stocked library that doesn’t just consist of textbooks older than our parents.

How do we make this happen? It’s simpler than you think, my fellow Tanzanians. We have got what it takes just a little creativity and a whole lot of collective willpower.

Here’s the plan: Let’s all consider skipping lunch at least once a year (you will not die) to contribute towards buying furniture for our schools.

Think about it: a little sacrifice today can mean a brighter tomorrow. The average Tanzanian spends a few thousand shillings on a hearty plate of pilau, chips mayai, or that fried chicken that tastes better than anything you will find in a textbook.

But what if, just once a year, we decided to take that lunch money and convert it into something far more lasting than a satisfying meal? We could collectively buy chairs, desks and textbooks.

It’s the kind of meal that keeps on giving because who can sit, read and learn without a proper chair, right? But wait, we don’t stop there.

Imagine this: individuals, businesses, institutions all coming together to stock our school libraries with relevant, updated resources. With a little creativity and corporate social responsibility, companies can easily contribute to this cause.

And while we’re at it, let’s talk about teacher incentives. After all, educators are the backbone of our future and they deserve more than just a “thank you” at the end of the year.

By contributing funds or even organising workshops and support programmes for teachers, we can ensure that they are not just surviving they are thriving! So, here is the call to action: Let’s make a pact, Tanzanians.

Skip lunch, gather donations, contribute in any way you can and let’s make a real difference in our schools. It might be just one meal today, but it’s one small sacrifice for a mighty transformation in our classrooms tomorrow.

Together, we will ensure that our children have the resources they need to succeed and grow into the leaders we know they can be. Because when Tanzanians unite, we don’t just build schools, we build the future. Ball in our court.
