Six best graduands claim UDSM merit scholarships

SIX best performing graduands at the 15th graduation ceremony of the Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) have claimed merit scholarships from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) to pursue masters’ studies.
In his brief remarks to the beneficiaries and all other graduates, former President, who is the UDSM Chancellor Dr Jakaya Kikwete, urged them to continue working hard.
Dr Kikwete presided over the ceremony at the institution’s main campus in the city over the weekend
“I hope that when you complete your masters’ programmes, you will stay put to offer your skills here and not leave for somewhere else,” said Kikwete.
Mr Kikwete encouraged all the graduates on the day to have significant contributions in fostering development of the country.
Earlier, UDSM Council Chairperson Ambassador Mwanaidi Sinare hailed the government through the Ministry for Education, Science and Technology for provision of funds to execute various development projects aimed at improving infrastructures.
She named one of the projects as the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) of which, she disclosed that through it, more than 17bn/- will be used to facelift the available buildings, establishing new ones as well as helping in financing for further skills upgrade of UDSM staffs.
On his part, UDSM Vice-Chancellor Prof William Anangisye congratulated all the graduates for successfully completing their studies, while acknowledging that it could not have been easy for them to reach this far without dedication and hard working.
“You all deserve pat on your backs for making it to this stage…the journey was not easy but you have made it. You were compelled to cancel out other engagements in order to get enough studying time and pass examinations,” he said.
He added: “Though they (students) are the ones who attended classes and visit libraries to conduct researches, they are aware that their successes have also been contributed by other stakeholders including government, their families and friends who encouraged them throughout their academic journey.”
Prof Anangisye also seized the platform to laud DUCE lecturers and other members of staff for their efforts in nurturing the graduates, whom he said are now ready to render their obtained academic skills to the public.
DUCE Principal Prof Stephen Maluka pledged that they will continue to produce best graduands with all the required qualities demanded by job market so that they can easily fit in.
“These graduates are ripe hence we expect to have employees of high integrity who are well embraced by members of the society wherever they go. We are unleashing them to the public so that they can too have a hand in developmental activities,” he said.
He also highlighted that DUCE has managed to establish a gender desk where different gender-related cases are amicably resolved and that the institution is benefiting a lot from a UNESCO funded O3 Plus project (Our Lives, Our Rights, Our Future) which encourages good health among learners.
