THE Singida Regional Commissioner (RC), Peter Serukamba, has urged Manyoni District councilors l to avoid engaging in revenue collections rather stick to its responsibility of supervising and assessing the collections.
The RC gave the advice in Manyoni on Friday, during his tour to introduce himself to public servants and ward councilors in the district after being appointed to the post.
RC Serukamba emphasized that, the main duty of councilors is to supervise and assess revenue collection instead of involving themselves in the activity for personal gains.
“May I remind you councilors, your main duty is to supervise and assess revenue collection activities… if you involve yourself in collecting revenue then who will be questioned if there are losses of district revenue ,” RC Serukamba queried .
RC Serukamba further advised the public servants and councilors to consider and maintain power structure in order for to enhance performance.
He said if everyone will perform his duties without interfering with others duties, then revenue collection in the district council will improve.
Either, he directed Manyoni District Executive Director (DED), Meleckzederc Humbe to form a special committee which will closely supervise revenue collection in the district and provide weekly and quaterly reports.
RC Serukamba further directed the DED to deal effectively with people who collect revenue but they don’t deposit the money in banks on time because it is contrary to the law.
On his part, the District Council Chairman and the Chancellor of Makanda Ward, Jumanne Mlagaza, also admitted that, there is a problem of some councilors who interfere with revenue collection for their personal gains.
“May I advise you my fellow councilors, to stop engaging in revenue collection for your personal interests. The situation is unhealthy for our District Council development,” said the chairman.
He further urged the Manyoni DC’s public servants and councilors to cooperate in order to boost revenue collection and thus enhance development in the district.
Recently, President Samia Suluhu Hassan appointed Serukamba as Singida RC taking over from Dr Binilith Mahenge who has retired.
