Simba sniff final spot

ZANZIBAR: SIMBA secured a narrow 1-0 victory against South Africa’s Stellenbosch in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup semi-final at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar yesterday.

The solitary goal came courtesy of Jean Charles Ahoua’s stunning free-kick in the 45th minute which gave the Tanzanian giants a slender advantage heading into the second leg next Sunday at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, South Africa.

Following Simba’s yesterday win, President Samia Suluhu Hassan praised the club for their performance, underscoring the joy the win brought to Tanzanians.

She expressed her pride in the team for representing the country on the continental stage.

In her statement, President Suluhu Hassan said, “Congratulations to Simba SC for their victory in the CAF Confederation Cup. You have brought immense joy to your fans and all Tanzanians, while proudly flying our nation’s flag. Your achievement is a source of pride for the entire country.”

She further added that as a token of appreciation, the club would receive support from the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports.

“You will receive a reward from my office through the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports. I wish you all the best in your upcoming matches.”

From the outset, Simba displayed their attacking prowess, creating several chances. In the 20th minute, Shomari Kapombe came close with an acrobatic strike off a cross from Kibu Denis, but his effort narrowly missed the target.

Ten minutes later, Elie Mpanzu received a pass from Ahoua and fired a powerful shot from outside the box, only for Stellenbosch goalkeeper Oscar Masuluke to make a crucial save.

Simba’s relentless pressing proved to be a constant threat for Stellenbosch, with Elie Mpanzu, Kibu Denis and Steven Mukwala weaving through the defence with skill and flair.

Their dangerous play forced several yellow cards for the visitors, with Kazie Enyinnaya and Ibraheem Jabaar both cautioned for fouls.

Ahoua’s free kicks were a constant danger throughout the first half. The first came in the 38th minute, a delivery that was well-executed but denied by Masuluke.

However, just minutes before the break, Ahoua found the back of the net with a superbly struck free-kick from distance. It took a slight bounce before eluding the goalkeeper’s grasp, giving Simba a deserved lead at the interval.

Despite Stellenbosch’s physical approach, they struggled to break down Simba’s defence. Their throw-ins, which often resembled set-pieces, caused brief moments of anxiety, but Simba’s backline stood firm, clearing the danger and keeping the visitors at bay.

The second half saw more opportunities for Simba to extend their lead.

In the dying moments of the match, Mpanzu once again proved his worth, setting up Leonel Ateba for a shot that was saved by the goalkeeper.

As the final whistle approached, Ahoua had a chance to seal the game with a one-on-one opportunity against an empty net, but his shot went wide, ensuring the match ended 1-0 in Simba’s favour.

As the return leg approaches, Simba will have a slight advantage when they travel to Durban next week. However, Stellenbosch will still pose a significant threat as both teams compete for a spot in the final against either the Moroccan champions RS Berkane or the Algerian club CS Constantine.
