DAR ES SALAAM: SIMBA cruised into the third round of Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC) after a hefty 4-0 win over Tembo FC at Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.
The Reds became the 15th Mainland Premier League side to make it this far of the competition, meaning that the third-round fixture will be dominated by top flight league envoys.
Only Tanzania Prisons failed to make a breakthrough after succumbing to a 6-5 post match shootout upset at the hands of TRA Kilimanjaro in an encounter played at Sokoine Memorial Stadium in Mbeya.
Simba were lively yesterday, scoring two goals in each 45 minutes. Luis Miquissone, Saido Ntibazonkiza netted in the opening 45 minutes before substitutes Saleh Karabaka and Pa Omar Jobe netting one each at the restart.
It was Miquissone who opened floodgates for the hosts in the 10th minute as he guided his strike into the back of the net thanks to Ivorian striker Freddy Kouablan’s cross. In the 31st minute, the Msimbazi Reds doubled their lead courtesy of tireless Ntibazonkiza, who headed home a well calculated Sadio Kanoute’s delivery.
Leading by 2-0, it was vividly clear that the Tabora based outfits were running out of gas as they could not keep pace with Abdelhak Benchikha’s charges. In the second half, the Msimbazi street giants maintained their dominance, giving no breathing space to the guest team.
This paid off later for Benchikha’s side as substitutes Karabaka and Gambian import striker Omar Jobe put the game beyond Tembo’s reach in the 80th and 82nd minutes respectively to make the scoreboard read 4-0.
Three Simba players — Kouablan, Edwin Balua and Jobe were making their debut in red shirt, with the two import strikers having a real taste of Tanzanian football.
Tembo had twin scoring chances midway in the second half, tasking Simba goalie Hussein Abel into action but none of them went into the back of the net. They came in the second segment with fresh mind no wonder they defended well most of Simba’s lethal attempts though they conceded twice in each half.
In Tabora, Tembo FC parade in the Third Division Regional League and have since been shown an exit door of the contest, which is played on knockout format.
Fifteen Premier League teams that have qualified for the third round are Simba, Yanga, Kagera Sugar, Mtibwa Sugar, Coastal Union, Ihefu, JKT Tanzania, Dodoma Jiji, Singida Fountain Gate, Namungo, Tabora United, Mashujaa, Geita Gold, Azam and KMC.
