DAR ES SALAAM: SIMBA and Sudanese side Al Hilal played to a 1-1 draw in a friendly match staged at KMC Stadium in Dar es Salaam

The encounter was a vital part of Simba’s preparations for their upcoming CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round clash against Al Ahli Tripoli at 11 June Stadium in Libya, and the return leg in Dar es Salaam the following week.

The encounter showcased both the strengths and areas for improvement of the Tanzanian giants. Simba fans were treated to an impressive debut performance by newly signed forward Leonel Ateba.

The Cameroonian striker made an immediate impact, scoring the opening goal in the 25th minute. Ateba’s goal came courtesy of a well-weighted assist from Ladaki Chasambi, who delivered a precise pass that allowed Ateba to slot the ball past Al Hilal’s goalkeeper, Issa Fofana.

The goal highlighted Ateba’s poise and finishing ability, giving the fans a glimpse of the quality he brings to the squad. Throughout the match, Simba demonstrated notable improvements in several areas.

Their utilisation of corner set pieces and free kicks was particularly sharp. Kibu Dennis nearly doubled Simba’s lead with a powerful free kick in the 14th minute, only to be thwarted by a fine save from Fofana.

Valente Nouma also tested Fofana with two additional free kicks, showcasing Simba’s renewed emphasis on dead-ball situations.

Defensively, Simba showed resilience, especially with midfield and defensive formations. However, the team’s strength was put to test in the second half when Al Hilal’s Serge Pokou capitalised on a quick counterattack in the 76th minute to level the score.

The goal exposed Simba’s vulnerability to rapid breaks, an area that will require attention as they gear up for their continental fixtures.

A highlight of the match was the return of former first-choice goalkeeper, Aishi Manula, who was making his comeback after a period of absence.

Manula played the first half, delivering several key saves and demonstrated ability to initiate play from the back, with precise footwork. He was substituted at halftime for Abel Hussein, giving the latter valuable game time..
