Sigh of relief as villagers

MTWARA: OVER 2,400 residents of Malamba in Nanyamba District Council, Mtwara Region, now have a reason to smile after gaining access to clean and safe water for domestic use, thanks to a newly completed well water project.
The much-needed project, worth 101m/-, was implemented by the government’s Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) and officially handed over to the community during the 2025 Uhuru Torch race.
Construction of the well began in January and was completed in May this year.
During an inspection ceremony yesterday, local residents revealed emotional testimonies about the hardships they previously faced in their search for water.
“We encountered many dangers, including wild animals like lions, genderbased violence and time constraints,” said Sofia Hamisi, a resident of the area.
Another villager, Faraja Abdallah pointed out the toll the water scarcity had on women and girls.
“We were most affected. The physical risks and harassment we faced had serious impacts on our health, work and overall well-being,” she said.

Residents praised RUWASA for delivering a life-changing project, noting that it has significantly reduced the burdens and dangers previously endured by women and girls in the community.
RUWASA Civil Engineer for Mtwara District, Mr Abdulazizi Hemed said the project is part of the agency’s broader initiative to improve water service coverage in underserved areas.
“This project aims to serve around 2,400 residents, with a goal of raising the water service coverage rate in the area to 60.9 per cent,” he said.
Leader of the Uhuru Torch race, Mr Ismail Ussi commended RUWASA for its dedication to expanding access to clean water in rural communities.
“We applaud RUWASA for its commitment to ensuring rural populations gain access to clean and safe water,” he said.
“We also urge residents to manage the facility sustainably so that it benefits both current and future generations.”
