Shipping stakeholders urge improvement at Dar Port

DAR ES SALAAM: MAJOR stakeholders of shipping and port services including, Trademark Africa, have expressed a need for Dar es Salaam Port to keep improving other services it carries despite hitting remarkable success in the container clearing section.

The meeting held in Dar es Salaam today said container clearing service has vastly improved in recent years when a ship has to wait for 3 days at the port compared to 30 days in the past.

Still, despite this remarkable achievement in container clearance, the port management needs to improve the services of sections to suit the modern-era management system.

Speaking in today’s meeting in Dar es Salaam, Trademark’s Director, Sanjai Rhugani said the need for the port to improve other services is among the hot issue of their discussion whose aim is to create broader business in Africa through the Dar es Salaam port.

“We target to expand business in Africa in terms of shipping through Tanzania,” he stressed,”  Rughani said.

In retrospect, the Director of TradeMark Afrika East Africa zone Monica Hangi said her institution campaigns to make the government bring good cooperation among the businessmen through the services being carried out at Tanzanian ports.

Additionally, she said the Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) has given directives and procedures on how to work with the port authority when they have something that can improve the port’s performance.

“Positive ideas that can help improve the performance of the port is essential as it will help them, the port, and Tanzania in general,” she said.

Additionally, Ms Hangi said the Tanzania Revenue Authority has assured them safety of their containers and imported goods while at the port saying TRA has improved its security system at the port.

During the meeting, the acting Director of TPA, Abed Gallus said container clearing service has seen notable improvement as today a ship stays at the port for only three days while previously a ship used to stay at the port for 30 days.

Gallus commended Trademark Africa for its role in fast-tracking the clearance services.

 “Trademark Africa has provided us with adequate information on the port services which has helped us improve various sections,” he said.

Additionally, the acting Director said more than 1,000 containers that stayed long at the port have been shifted to Kwala dry port from Dar es Salaam port.

 “We plan to transport 500 more containers to Kwala port this week. The customers have responded well to this system as Kwala Port offers 60 days free of charge for a container.

Tradekmark Africa brought 25 Prominent business community from East Africa for port and sensitization of improvement of systems across the central and southern corridors for easy removal of cargo from the port.
