DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government, through the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), has acquired 17 high-speed electric train locomotives with a speed of 160 km/h, which have already arrived and begun operations.
TRC’s Director General, Masanja Kadogosa, revealed this during a press conference highlighting the corporation’s achievements over the four years of the Sixth Phase Government.
Kadogosa stated that TRC signed a contract with South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem on July 14, 2021, to purchase the 17 electric train locomotives, which have now been delivered and started providing services as of December 2024.
Additionally, TRC signed an agreement with Hyundai Rotem for 10 sets of passenger trains (Electric Multiple Units – EMUs), which have already arrived in the country and undergone testing.

The corporation also signed a contract with China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) of China for 1,430 freight wagons, of which 264 had already arrived and were undergoing trials by December 2024.
Kadogosa further mentioned that 71 passenger coaches have been received from South Korean and German companies, with the remaining 18 expected to arrive this year.
Alongside the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) projects, TRC continues to improve the existing Meter Gauge Railway (MGR), including the rehabilitation of the Dar es Salaam–Isaka and Kaliua–Mpanda railway lines. Additionally, the construction of a bridge between Godegode and Gulwe is ongoing as part of the railway infrastructure improvement efforts.

This development is a welcome positive trajectory for logistics infrastructure development in the region,which could see reduction of cargo transport halved,from Dar to Kampala and other partner states in the Regions.
