DODOMA: The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) electric train, which made its maiden trip from Dar es Salaam early Thursday, arrived in Dodoma, the country’s capital city safely.
The electric train departed Dar es Salaam station at 06:00am, carrying over 900 passengers in 14 carriages.
Tanzania Railways Corporation Director Masanja Kadogosa, said that this pre-operation trip serves as an introduction to the official inauguration ceremony, which will be presided over by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, next Thursday.
Passengers on the maiden journey praised the new service for drastically reducing travel time and enhancing their punctuality.

The introduction of the electric train service between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma is part of Tanzania’s broader infrastructure development strategy.
The first phase of the SGR, connecting Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, officially launched in mid-June 2024.
This modern rail system is expected to boost economic growth by improving transportation efficiency and connectivity across the country.
The SGR project is a cornerstone of the country’s vision, aiming to transform the country’s infrastructure and promote regional integration.
The electric trains are designed to provide faster, safer and more environmentally friendly transportation options, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s development.
