Serengeti’s balloon safari, great wildebeest migration fascinate Man United legend

SERENGETI: A breathtaking hot-air balloon safari over the vast plains of Serengeti National Park has placed Tanzania’s world-renowned wildlife spectacle once again in the global spotlight, as former Manchester United and England star Rio Ferdinand experienced the Great Wildebeest Migration from the skies.

The football legend was accompanied by Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda to witness the beautiful view earlier today, May 21.2026.

The unforgettable aerial journey offered Ferdinand a front-row seat to the dramatic movement of millions of wildebeest across the Serengeti ecosystem, one of the most iconic natural events on earth and a cornerstone of Tanzania’s tourism identity.

The football legend’s wildlife encounter began a day earlier upon landing at the Seronera airstrip inside the park, where he also came face-to-face with lions in close proximity, an experience he said had long been on his personal bucket list.

Tanzania continues to strengthen its global tourism appeal through flagship destinations such as Serengeti, home to an estimated 17,000 lions and a diverse ecosystem that positions the country among the world’s leading wildlife conservation and safari destinations.
