Senegal coach lauds Senegal’s resilience

ZANZIBAR: SENEGAL opened their title defense in the 2024 African Nations Championship with a narrow 1-0 victory over Nigeria at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Tuesday.

The only goal of the match came from Christian Gomis in the second half during this exciting Group D encounter.

The Lions of Teranga quickly established their presence in a competition that features players from domestic leagues. Facing a Super Eagles squad returning to the CHAN for the first time since 2018, the reigning champions navigated the match’s challenges effectively.

The first half saw a balanced contest with few significant opportunities for either team.

Both sides cautiously evaluated each other before ramping up the intensity. Senegal’s goalkeeper Marc Diouf was compelled to make a save against Sikiru Alimi, while Daouda Ba and Moctar Koïté tested the Nigerian defense from outside the box.

The decisive moment occurred in the 75th minute. Substitute Moctar Koïté made a dynamic run down the right flank and delivered an accurate cross to Gomis, who finished effortlessly with his left foot to break the deadlock.

The scoreline remained intact until the final whistle, placing Senegal at the top of Group D, benefited by a 1-1 draw between Congo and Sudan in the group’s other match.

The intensity of the game was on full display, highlighting both teams’ attacking potential despite limited clear chances. The match included heavy tackles, and both sides had to contend with early bookings.

As the match progressed, Nigeria attempted to increase pressure, bringing on players like Vincent Temitope and Godwin Obaje in hopes of finding an equalizer. Temitope nearly succeeded late in the game, but his shot went wide, and Senegal’s defense, anchored by Seyni Ndiaye and Joseph Layousse, held strong against Nigeria’s late attempts.

As Senegal leads Group D, Nigeria will look to rebound in their upcoming matches against Congo Brazzaville, with the road to the quarter-finals promising to be challenging or both teams.
