Zanzibar Minister of Labour, Economy and Investment, Mudriki Soraga, has urged employers in the Isles to comply with labour laws that complement government efforts of improving people’s living standards.
Mr Soraga made the remarks at an event to recognise the best employer organised jointly by the Zanzibar Financial Industrial Consultant Workers Union (ZAFICOWU) and Employers Organisation for Zanzibar (ZANEMA).
During the event, the SGA Security Company emerged as the overall winner among security firms operating in Zanzibar.
“I commend SGA for showing the way for other companies and that it is possible to comply fully with labour laws and still succeed in business,” he said.
The ZAFICOWU Secretary General, Saraphina Maasare, explained that they get maximum cooperation from SGA and threaten its leaders always consult them before making any move concerning employees.
“The level of engagement is commendable and this demonstrates the reason customers choose SGA Security,” she said.
The SGA Representative, Ms Mosumba Wambura, said that they have clear guidelines on the engagement of employees, unions and government, consultation at all levels to get it right and avoid labour disputes.
“Our secret is to embrace all the stakeholders, key amongst these are the employee unions and the government,” she added.
SGA Tanzania Managing Director, Mr Eric Sambu, commended his mid-level managers for living the promises and aligning the operations with the wishes of the Zanzibar government on how to conduct business.
He said that SGA takes pride in being the largest employer and with a record of long-serving employees, the majority of them have over twenty years in the company, a clear demonstration that SGA makes a career for them.
“We believe that compliance is our license to operate and we do what we promise all stakeholders,” he said.
SGA now employs over 6,000 employees.
