SBL links farmers to new markets

Dodoma: The Nane Nane exhibitions have proven to be an effective platform for bolstering farmers’ interests by providing access to new market opportunities in the country, as key exhibitors and stakeholders have responded positively to the call to connect this group with the manufacturing sector.

Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL), one of the key exhibitors at the annual event, played a significant role as part of its plan to empower 400 farmers through agribusiness education and material support, such as providing free seeds.

This initiative aims to connect with the farming community, share valuable knowledge, and explore new market opportunities for local farmers.

Speaking during Farmers’ Day in Dodoma, SBL’s Agribusiness Extension Officer, Mr. Aloyce Kimaro, stated that the company has used this year’s exhibition to link several farmers with prospective buyers for their produce.

“We serve and take care of all our farmers, whether small, medium, or large. All of them receive contracts from us,” he said.

SBL is implementing this plan in 16 regions, namely Singida, Dodoma, Manyara, Moshi, Arusha, Morogoro, Iringa, Mbeya, Rukwa, Kagera, Njombe, Ruvuma, Tabora, Mwanza, Mara, and Tanga.

Kimaro added that SBL is working towards expanding its sourcing capacity to include red sorghum farmers. The brewer is currently sourcing white sorghum from local farmers.

The extension officer also noted that SBL has demonstrated its commitment to connecting its farmers with institutions that provide inputs and credit, offering comprehensive support beyond merely purchasing their produce. This holistic approach ensures that farmers are well-prepared to meet market demands and improve their livelihoods.

SBL attests that the foundation of its high-quality products begins on the farm. According to Kimaro, SBL visits farmers, recognizes their efforts, conducts soil testing, and provides them with the best seeds.

Currently, SBL is expanding its sourcing from 400 farmers, sourcing 80 percent of its beer-making cereals, such as barley, sorghum, and maize, provided the quality and quantity meet the company’s standards.
