Sauti za Busara Festival 2025 kicks off today

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR is set to ignite with the 22nd edition of the Sauti za Busara Festival, kicking off today with a spectacular carnival parade showcasing the island’s rich culture and dynamic music scene.

Music and culture enthusiasts will gather at Forodhani Gardens, where the festival unfolds under the African sky, the air alive with the rhythms of drums, traditional dances, and the vibrant colours of cultural attire.

The festivities begin at 3:00 PM with the grand Carnival Parade, departing from Kisonge Square (Michenzani) and winding its way through Zanzibar’s charming streets toward the iconic Forodhani Gardens.

Led by spirited performers in traditional dress, the parade will bring the island’s heritage to life in a joyous procession.

“Whether you are a fan of traditional tunes, jazz fusion, or modern rhythms, today’s opening will be an unforgettable celebration of both music and heritage,” said Journey Ramadhami, Festival Director.

“Join us in witnessing this grand spectacle – a parade, a party and a once-in-a-lifetime musical journey that will leave you craving more of Zanzibar’s magical energy.” He promised vibrant drums, lively dances and an energetic crowd, a sensory feast marking the festival’s start in Zanzibar’s historic heart.

At 4:30 PM, the focus shifts to the Forodhani Stage, where the first performance takes place.

Cameroon’s Joyce Babatunde will enchant the audience with her soulful melodies, followed by the high-energy beats of Baba Kash & The Band.

With the Indian Ocean breeze and the aroma of freshly caught seafood from nearby vendors, Forodhani’s unique atmosphere provides the perfect backdrop.

As the sun sets, the action moves to the Main Stage at the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe).

This historic venue will host a diverse lineup, beginning with the Zanzibar Taarab Heritage Ensemble, bringing traditional Taarab music to life.

Sudan’s WD Abo will follow with their soulful beats, succeeded by the smooth sounds of Leo Wanyika & The Swahili Blues.

The evening culminates with Mozambique’s Assa Matuse’s dynamic jazz fusion and a grand performance by Réunion’s Tinsel Maloya, a traditionalist showcasing his unique cultural expression.

Meanwhile, the Amphitheatre Stage offers a different experience. Rwanda’s Boukuru will open with their jazz spiritual sounds, followed by South Africa’s Ukhoikhoi, electrifying the crowd with innovative beats.

The headliner for the Amphitheatre, Frida Amani, will close the night with her powerful voice and emotive stage presence, promising an energetic and passionate performance.

From the breezy shores of Forodhani to the historic Old Fort, Sauti za Busara offers a rich tapestry of musical styles deeply rooted in the vibrant cultural fabric of the African continent.
