Sarr, Koulibaly net as Senegal qualify for World Cup last-16
SENEGAL cruised through to the last 16 of the World Cup after beating Ecuador 2-1 in a Group A match played at Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar.
The Lions of Teranga join Netherlands, who thrashed the hosts Qatar 2-0, after bagging all three important points to finish in the top two.
The Oranges are on top of Group A with seven points, followed by Senegal’s Lions of Teranga who have collected six points.
Ismail Sarr’s converted a spot kick in a 44th minute as the Lions went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Revamped Ecuador returned in the second half with determination of levelling the game before executing its primary plan of winning the encounter.
Moises Caicedo scored in the 67th minute to cancel Senegal’s first half goal.
The goal lasted for only three minutes as Kalidou Koulibaly doubled for the Lions; the goal that sent Senegal into the last 16.
Senegal reached the last 16 of the World Cup after 20 years since Japan and South Korea jointly hosted the world’s most prestigious soccer tournament.
