Samia’s super specialist doctors boost surgical capacity in Iramba

SINGIDA: THE SUPER Specialist programme initiated by President Samia Suluhu Hassan has built capacity among medical staff in Iramba District, especially to perform major surgeries.

On Tuesday this week, the super specialists conducted major operations in the area alongside the district’s doctors and other medical professionals, continuing with efforts to impart more skills to professionals nationwide.

Iramba District Medical Officer, Dr Gloria Andrew, said the medical professionals at the district hospital initially lacked the expertise, but after with the onset of the programme, they can now perform major surgeries.

Dr Andrew mentioned that the doctors had performed two major surgeries, including one on a pregnant woman who had given birth but was experiencing severe bleeding.

“The specialist doctors who were brought here were able to stitch special sutures to prevent the uterus from being removed, where our previous capacity would have only allowed us to remove the uterus to save the mother,” said Dr Andrew.

Dr Andrew emphasised that without the presence of the specialist doctors, the situation would have required the removal of the uterus to save the woman’s life, but the specialist doctors managed to save her uterus as well.

Additionally, another surgery performed by the specialist doctors involved the removal of a neck tumour from a woman, who had been born with it and was unable to receive treatment due to the unavailability of such services at the district hospital.

Speaking about the surgery, specialist surgeon Dr Dennis Exavery explained that the operation, known as Cis-trunk, is rarely performed in district hospitals due to the lack of specialist surgeons capable of carrying it.

Dr Exavery added that they trained the hospital’s doctors on how to use a device known as a diathermy machine, which helps control bleeding during surgery. The device was available at the hospital but was not in use due to a lack of expertise.

Meanwhile, residents of the Manyara Region have been urged to stop using traditional treatments for bone fractures and instead seek proper medical care at hospitals.

This was stated by Dr Leadry Malisa from the Manyara Regional Referral Hospital during a medical camp by President Samia’s specialist doctors at the Mbulu District Council Hospital.

Dr Malisa explained that traditional treatments have caused significant harm to bones and emphasised that residents should visit hospitals for better care, as skilled professionals are available to provide proper treatment.

He also shared that through the President Samia Specialist Doctors Camp at the Mbulu District Council Hospital, they are scheduled to perform surgery on a 14-year-old child whose knee has swollen for approximately three months after a fall.

“The mother had taken him to a traditional healer, who tied the knee with sticks, but the treatment did not work, causing the knee to swell due to bacteria further affecting the inner bone,” said Dr Malisa.

Dr Malisa urged residents to turn out in large numbers whenever they hear about the arrival of President Samia’s specialist doctors in their areas, as they are there to offer top-quality specialist services.

Residents of Mbulu District Council expressed their gratitude to President Samia’s government for bringing specialist services closer to their areas, reducing the cost and time needed to seek such services at regional hospitals like KCMC.

“The arrival of the specialist doctors is a blessing for us because reaching hospitals like KCMC, Mount Meru, or Benjamin Mkapa is very difficult. We are very grateful to President Samia for bringing these doctors closer to us,” said Godfrey Maheso.
