Samia tasks Makalla to supervise AFCON preps
DODOMA: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed the newly appointed Regional Commissioner of Arusha, Amos Makalla, to ensure proper preparations are made for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, which is expected to take place in the region.
The President issued the directive today, August 26, 2025, during a swearing-in ceremony for recently appointed leaders held at Chamwino State House in Dodoma. In her address, President Samia emphasized the importance of the Arusha Region being well-prepared by developing modern infrastructure and creating a welcoming environment for visitors and tournament participants.
“The government has major development plans for Arusha City and the region as a whole, including infrastructure projects aimed at supporting the 2027 AFCON tournament. Work is ongoing, and I want you to oversee it effectively to ensure successful completion,” said President Samia.

She also called on regional leaders to mobilize and encourage citizens to actively participate and prepare to take advantage of the economic opportunities that will come with hosting the tournament, including business, tourism, and service provision to visitors.
Before he was appointed Arusha Regional Commissioner, Amos Makalla served as the Secretary for Ideology, Publicity, and Training of the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), a role he held with distinction.
