Samia deploys SADC Mission to observe Mauritius election

DAR ES SALAAM: The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Chairperson, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has deployed the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to observe the National Assembly Election in the Republic of Mauritius, set for November 10, 2024.

The deployment aligns with SADC’s commitment to promoting democracy across its member states, ensuring elections are held transparently, freely, and fairly.

In her capacity as the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, President Samia has appointed the former Chief Justice of Tanzania, Mohamed Chande Othman as the Head of Mission.

This strategic move demonstrates SADC’s dedication to reinforcing democratic governance throughout the region, as mandated by the 2021 revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.

Coordinated by the SADC Secretariat led by Executive Secretary Elias Mpedi Magosi, the SEOM team arrived in Mauritius on October 28 to begin preparations.

The observers will be deployed across all ten administrative districts, including Rodrigues Island, to monitor various phases of the election processes, from the pre-election stage through polling day and post-election activities.

During their stay, SEOM will engage with a broad range of stakeholders to gain insights into Mauritius’s political and security landscape and assess the conduct of the election according to SADC principles.

The mission underscores SADC’s commitment to promoting democratic processes and safeguarding peace, stability, and security within its member states.
