Samia appoints new NEC members, others

PRESIDENT  Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed three new members of  the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Meanwhile, the Head of State appointed new Internal Auditor General and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Tanzania Government Flight Agency (TGFA).

According to the statement unveiled by the State House to the Media yesterday, she appointed retired Judge of the Court of Appeal, Mbarouk Salim Mbarouk to be the Vice-Chairman of the NEC. The retired Judge Mbarouk is continuing to serve the position for the second term.

President Samia also appointed Ambassador Omar Ramadhan Mapuri to be a member of the Commission.  He is also serving the second term.

Equally, she appointed Dr Zakia Mohamed Abubakar to be a Member of the Commission.

In the directive, the appointment of members of the National Election Commission will be effective from July 1, 2023.

The Commission as constituted by the Constitution consists of seven members who are appointed by the President.

The Commissioners enjoy security of tenure of office and can only be removed from office by the President for failure to discharge their functions either due to illness or misconduct.

In a related development, the President appointed Prof Idrissa Mshoro to be the Chairman of the Advisory Board of Tanzania Government Flight Agency (TGFA).

According to the statement Prof Mshoro is designated as Chairman of the Board for the second term.

The Head of state also appointed Mr Benjamin Magai to be the Internal Auditor General.

Before his  appointment, Mr Magai was the Deputy Auditor General  for National Audit office of Tanzania (NAOT).
