Safe, ready, united: Tanzania eyes a landmark tournament

DAR ES SALAAM: WITH less than one year before East Africa welcomes the continent’s biggest football spectacle, Tanzania’s latest assurance on security sends a strong message that preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are gathering momentum.

Minister for Home Affairs Patrobas Katambi’s declaration that Tanzania is “safe and well prepared” to host the tournament is more than a routine government update.

It reflects the country’s determination to ensure that AFCON 2027 becomes a defining moment in its sporting history and a showcase of its capacity to host one of Africa’s premier sporting events.

For the first time in the competition’s history, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya will jointly host the Africa Cup of Nations.

The three East African neighbours have been presented with a rare opportunity to demonstrate regional unity, improve infrastructure, stimulate tourism and elevate football across the region.

Small and medium-sized enterprises stand to benefit from increased commercial activity, while the tourism sector can use AFCON as a platform to market Tanzania’s world-renowned attractions, from Mount Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro and Serengeti to Zanzibar’s beaches and rich cultural heritage.

Beyond immediate economic gains, AFCON 2027 offers an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy.

Investments in stadiums, roads, airports and training facilities can continue serving communities long after the final whistle.

Improved sporting infrastructure could also strengthen domestic football by providing better facilities for clubs, youth academies and national teams.

For Tanzanian football, the tournament represents more than just hosting rights. It offers Taifa Stars a chance to compete on home soil before passionate local supporters, a privilege that could inspire a new generation of footballers.

Katambi’s appreciation of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi underscores the high-level political commitment behind the preparations.

Sustained leadership will be essential as construction projects, logistical planning and operational readiness intensify over the coming months. However, the work is far from complete.
