SACP Muliro commends Maasai leaders for upholding honesty, integrity, and accountability
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Commander of the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone, SACP Jumanne Muliro, has commended Maasai community leaders and members living in the city for upholding values of honesty, integrity, and accountability in the various responsibilities entrusted to them.
Speaking during a meeting with leaders of the community, Muliro said he was encouraged by their willingness to engage in discussions centered on the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, describing it as a sign of the community’s commitment to justice and equality for all citizens.
Muliro emphasized that it is wrong to associate an entire ethnic group with criminal acts committed by an individual or a small group of people. He noted that offenders should be identified and judged based on their personal actions rather than their ethnic background.
He said it is inappropriate for members of the public to use ethnic identities when labeling criminals or assigning blame to an entire community for the actions of a few individuals.
According to him, Tanzania’s Constitution guarantees equality for all citizens regardless of their ethnicity or origin.
The police commander’s remarks follow complaints from some members of the Maasai community who say they have faced ridicule and blame from sections of the public following the killing of a Chinese investor in the Mabibo area of Dar es Salaam.
In the incident, individuals alleged to have been the victim’s security guards and reportedly belonging to the Maasai community have been linked to the murder, sparking widespread debate on social media and among members of the public.
However, Maasai community leaders have maintained that it is unfair to judge or implicate the entire ethnic group over actions allegedly committed by a small number of individuals. They stressed that criminal responsibility is personal and should not be attributed to an entire community.
Muliro urged the public to continue upholding the principles of the rule of law, justice, and equality, while avoiding statements or actions that could promote discrimination or social division.
