DAR ES SALAAM: THE long-awaited registration of children under five years in Dar es Salaam Region will start early next month the Registration Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (Rita) Chief Executive Officer, Mr Frank Kanyusi, announced on Wednesday.
He told a seminar of health and administrative officials, who will be directly involved in the registration of the kids and giving them free birth certificates, that implementation of the registration programme in 25 regions has been a success.
In the 25 regions some 8,886,778 children have been registered. “Yours will be the last region. We have enough experience in conducting this special programme.
You will use latest technology in the exercise, he told amused officials who will use state smart phones to register children at mother and child centres and ward offices and send the information to RITA data base.
RITA expects to have 248,298 under-fives registered swiftly and get birth certificates in Dar es Salaam Region. Already 624.755 children or 60.3 percent of the regions legible children had been registered as of on Wednesday, Mr Kanyusi explained.
He did not say when the registration programme will be launched. The Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila urged parents to assemble at designated offices in their areas to make the registration exercise success.
The registration and certificates are free. We do not expect mischief. State organs are on the alert, he said.
He called for involvement of religious leaders and respected old people in the implementation of the programme.
The representative of the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNCEF), Mr Hosea Mitala, urged Dar es Salaam residents to turn up in large numbers and make the listing of children a big success.
UNICEF is strategic supporter of the countrywide programme. He thanked the government for taking the programme very seriously.
