Rising temperature worries Reps

ZANZIBAR: THE recent rise in temperatures has not only sparked complaints from the general public but has also raised concerns among Members of the House of Representatives, who have questioned the escalating heat levels and their impact over the past three months.

In response to the concerns, Minister of State in the Office of the First Vice-President (Environment), Ms Harusi Said Suleiman explained that, according to an assessment conducted by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), Zanzibar Office, the long-term average of maximum temperatures for Zanzibar was recorded at 31.7°C, 31.8°C, and 31.8°C for November, December and January, respectively.

She attributed the rising temperatures to climate change, further exacerbated by environmental degradation, including widespread deforestation.

“To mitigate the effects of climate change, including extreme heat, it is essential to restore Zanzibar’s greenery through the ‘Green Legacy Project,’ which focuses on largescale tree planting and environmental conservation,” she said.
