Rishi Sunak becomes UK PM after meeting with King Charles

King Charles III welcomes Rishi Sunak to Buckingham Palace, where he invited the newly-elected leader of the Conservative Party to become PM and form a new government

Rishi Sunak has been appointed prime minister by Britain’s King Charles after he accepted the resignation of Liz Truss.

The new Conservative leader was invited to form a government by the king when they met at Buckingham Palace this morning, not long after Ms Truss departed as the shortest-serving prime minister in history.

Mr Sunak, 42, is the UK’s first Hindu PM, the first of Asian heritage and the youngest for more than 200 years.
