Revenue, cleanliness top Mwanza’s new development agenda

MWANZA: NEWLY appointed Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Commissioner of Police (CP) Salum Rashid Hamduni, has directed authorities to boost revenue collection, improve city cleanliness and prepare for the expected El Niño rains as part of his immediate priorities for the region.

Speaking yesterday during the handover ceremony at the Regional Commissioner’s office, CP Hamduni said development would depend on hard work, humility and patriotism. “Our focus must be on hard work, humility and patriotism.

We must work together to ensure that the people of Mwanza benefit from the development they deserve,” he said.

The Regional Commissioner called for faster production and stronger revenue collection by both local and central government authorities, saying public funds must be used for their intended purposes.

“Every shilling collected by the Government must be properly used to create productivity and development for our people,” he said.

CP Hamduni also expressed concern over the state of cleanliness in Mwanza City, saying the region’s commercial importance demands higher standards of sanitation and safety.

“Mwanza is a city with a recognised status and therefore it must be clean and safe. We cannot accept a situation where poor cleanliness puts the health of our citizens at risk,” he said.

He urged city leaders to work with residents and other stakeholders to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.

The Regional Commissioner further instructed authorities to begin preparations for the expected El Niño rains by alerting communities and strengthening disaster readiness before the OctoberDecember rainy season.

He also directed council directors to ensure that the government’s 10 per cent loans reach women, youth and people with disabilities in accordance with established procedures.

“The 10 per cent loans must reach the intended beneficiaries. Women, youth and people with disabilities should be given the opportunity to use these funds to improve their livelihoods,” he said.

CP Hamduni further urged education authorities to prepare early for students expected to join various levels of education during the 2027/2028 academic year, saying school infrastructure should be ready before reporting dates.

Mwanza Regional Administrative Secretary, Dr Fatma Mganga, pledged cooperation with the new Regional Commissioner to ensure government responsibilities are implemented effectively.

“Cooperation among leaders is essential if we are to serve our people effectively and fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to us,” Dr Mganga said.
