Rehema, Vosta make history at BQ Open 2024 Tennis tourney

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIAN athletes, Rehema Saidi and Vosta Issaya, have claimed victory at the BQ Open 2024 Tennis Tournament at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Courts.

The prestigious event featured top tennis talents from across Africa, with participants from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zanzibar, Rwanda, Kenya and the host nation, Tanzania.

In exclusive interviews following their victories, both Saidi and Issaya expressed joy and pride in securing the coveted titles.

Rehema attributed her success to years of hard work, discipline and determination.

“Consistent training, oncourt focus and prayer were key to my success,” she said.

Reflecting on the intense competition, Saidi acknowledged the challenge posed by her opponents but remained confident in her performance.

“It was a tough field, with players from various countries who were all well-prepared, but in the end, it was my day to win,” she said.

Vosta Issaya, celebrating her own triumph, credited her tactical advantage for the victory.

“The competition was fierce, but my strategy gave me the edge, allowing me to emerge as the champion. This win is an honour for Tanzania,” Issaya remarked.

She also used the platform to encourage people with disabilities to engage in sports.

“Sports not only promote health and fitness but also open up opportunities for employment. I urge everyone, especially those at home, to get involved. The rewards of sports are countless,” she noted.

National Team Coach, Riziki Salum, expressed immense pride in the athletes’ achievements.

“This victory is a testament to the hard work, dedication and passion of our players,” he said.

“It proves that with the right preparation and support, our athletes can reach great heights.” The tournament sponsor, Professor John Bura, called for increased support for adaptive sports to ensure the continued growth of the game
