RC orders authority to ensure Bwawani source provide water to Karatu residents

ARUSHA: THE Arusha Regional Commissioner, CPA Amos Makalla, has directed the Karatu District Water and Sanitation Authority to expedite the process of securing a contractor to channel water to storage tanks and distribute it to residents of Karatu District in Arusha Region from the Bwawani water source.

CPA Makalla issued these instructions today, September 22, 2025, during his official visit to Karatu to inspect the implementation of various development projects. While visiting the Bwawani water source in Karatu town which had previously been damaged by flooding rains, disrupting water supply to the area Makalla emphasized the importance of restoring and utilizing this vital water source. The government had allocated special funds to rehabilitate the source, which remains a key supplier of water to Karatu and neighboring areas.

Makalla also commended the Karatu Water and Sanitation Authority for its effective management of water service delivery, which currently covers 71% of the district. He urged greater community involvement and education in protecting local water sources.

“I urge that we work together with local residents to protect our water sources, and as the Water Authority, we must continue to educate people on water source conservation and discourage contamination of these resources,” stressed CPA Makalla.

Earlier, in his report, the Karatu Water Authority Manager, Engineer Steven Siayi, informed the Regional Commissioner that the government had already disbursed over 145 million Tanzanian shillings for the project, which involves transporting water from the source to a 225,000-liter storage tank, and subsequently distributing it to residents. He added that the rehabilitated borehole has the capacity to produce 28,000 liters of water per hour.
