RC Chalamila leadership thrills Kagera residents

FORMER Kagera Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Albert Chalamila has been hailed for his commitment to ensure that various development projects are completed on time.

In an interview with the ‘Daily News,’ Ms Jasmina Hussein (25) who owns a shop at Kashai Street in Bukoba Municipal Council said that Mr Chalamila worked hard to ensure that the projects are completed in quality, meaning value for money.

“Mr Chalamila is among few leaders in the country who mingles with citizens at the grassroots level. We wish him the best of luck at his new working station,” she said of RC Chalamila who has been reshuffled to Dar es Salaam in the similar capacity.

Mr Joram Kobalyenda (54), a resident of Muleba District’s Kishanda village praised Mr Chalamila for making follow-up on farmers’ payments.

“In the past, payments for coffee farmers, after selling the cash crop to the Agricultural and Marketing Cooperative Society (AMCOS) were taking so long time, but during his tenure in the region he ensured that farmers get their payments on time,” he said.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan recently made minor reshuffle of RCs where Mr Chalamila was transferred to Dar es Salaam.

According to the Kagera Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS), Mr Toba Nguvila, mega projects being implemented in the region are the Rubafu Bay Cage Fish Farming project that is estimated to cost a total of 85 million US dollars.

About 12 Consortium Group of Companies (CGC) from the US had shown interest to invest in the project.

“We thank President Samia for the efforts in implementing people-oriented projects. The Rubafu Bay Cage Fish Farming project is of great importance as it would open a new chapter and boost region’s economy,” he said.

Elaborating, he said, the region had already received the Strategic Environment Assessment (SEA) certificate from the Vice-President’s office (NEMC), while other requirements were in final stages.

“Cage farming is a big opportunity where people could improve their livelihoods. I appeal to people to engage in cage farming and form cooperative groups to benefit from the funds.

The government has finalised plans to introduce cage fish farming in Kagera Region in efforts to increase revenue from fisheries resources.

Fish farming is an occupation which can rapidly make Kagera farmers combat poverty and hunger. Fish breeding is less demanding economic venture, which anyone willing can undertake,” he said.

Mr Nguvila also commended the government for allocating 20bn/- for   the construction of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) school in the region.

“On behalf of all Kagera residents, I applaud President Samia for allocating 20bn/- for   the construction of University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) school in the region. This is highly commendable as it will speed people’s development,” he stressed.

He called upon Tanzanians in the Diaspora who are coming from Kagera to invest back home and promote the region’s investment opportunities in various sectors while encouraging them to make efforts in finding markets for Tanzanian products and raw materials in their countries where they live for the benefit of majority Tanzanians.

For quite a long-time authority in Kagera region had been struggling to establish a public-owned university.

Until recently, there were only two university wings in Kagera,  owned by Catholic and Lutheran denominations; Cardinal Rugambwa Memorial University College (CARUMCO) and Josiah Kibira University College (JOKUCO) respectively.

However, the two university wings were temporarily closed pending fulfilling the regulations set down by the Ministry of Education.

During his recent tour in Kagera region, the retired President, Dr Jakaya Kikwete, who is also Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), tasked Kagera leaders to find suitable land for expansion of UDSM branch.

He made the remarks on a start of his one-day tour of Kagera region to get first-hand information on preparations for establishment of the UDSM branch.

Dr Kikwete revealed that the government had allocated about 8 million US dollars (approx. 20bn/-) for the establishment of the UDSM branch in Kagera.
