Rail upgrade gains Coast support

COAST REGION: AUTHORITIES in the Coast Region have commended government’s move of launching the project to rehabilitate the Central Railway from Dar es Salaam to Shinyanga.

This is the second phase of Tanzania Intermodal and Rail Development Plan (TIRP-2)—which is expected to contribute to social and economic development for the people in the region and the nation at large.

Acting Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Nsajigwa George made the statement after receiving reports from the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC).

The report was presented by the organisation’s delegation led by Head of Environment and Social Section Eng Dr Veronica Mirambo. “This project has a number of benefits to the people of this region.

Apart from improving passengers and cargo transportation, it will also create employment opportunities to people from different status during its implementation,” he noted.

He assured the TRC delegation of mutual support to ensure that all activities in the implementation of the project are being done with efficiency.

For her part, Dr Veronica explained that the project is being implemented by TRC in collaboration with the National Irrigation Commission (NIRC) on behalf of the government under the funding of the World Bank.

She further notified that the project is at the early stage of implementation, adding that experts’ team is visiting areas which will be involved in the project, including Coast Region.

“Major aim of rehabilitating the railway is to improve security, increase efficiency in transportation services and ensure that railway infrastructures remain strong and sustainable to cope with the climate changes effects throughout the implementation period,” she said.

Eng Dr Veronica went on to say that the project will involve improving the railway, constructing dams for receiving rainwater to reduce floods effects. It will also increase capacity for transporting both passengers and cargo inside the country and to neighbouring countries.
