PURA DG explains roles of technology in petroleum sub-sector

DAR ES SALAAM: The Director General of the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), Engineer Charles Sangweni, has said that technological advancement plays a significant role in the development and efficiency of the petroleum industry.

Engineer Sangweni made these remarks on May 27, 2025, while officiating the Africa Technology Conference in Dar es Salaam.

The conference, organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers Tanzania in collaboration with the Society of Petroleum Engineers Africa Region, brought together around 200 participants from within and outside the country. The aim was to discuss the development of the petroleum sector and exchange experiences in various areas.

Among the topics discussed were modern technologies used in operations across the petroleum value chain, including the extraction, processing, and transportation of petroleum resources.

Emphasizing the importance of technology, Sangweni underlined the need to prepare a skilled workforce with experience in utilizing modern technologies used in the sector.

“It is important to prepare our youth and professionals to adapt to the evolving technologies in the world,” Sangweni emphasized.

He also touched on the use of artificial intelligence in carrying out tasks performed by petroleum engineers and urged members of the community to continue enhancing their knowledge in this critical area.
