FINLAND: Tanzania is set to enhance its tree seed research and production through a new collaboration with Finland, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Hassan Abbas has announced.
The partnership will be facilitated through the Tanzania Forest Service Agency (TFS) in collaboration with Finland’s leading tree seed production centers aimed at leveraging Finland’s cutting- edge technology and expertise to enhance seed and seedling quality in Tanzania.
Dr Abbas revealed this collaboration during his visit on Wednesday to Finland’s Tapio Seed Center, located in Oitti, Lahti.
Tapio is one of the world’s leading centers for the production of high-quality timber tree seeds and conducting research on various tree species.
“Tanzania has its own tree seed centers, but the advanced technologies we have seen here are remarkable. Together with Prof Dos Santos Silayo, the Commissioner for Conservation at TFS we have agreed to partner with Tapio to significantly improve our research efforts and boost tree seed and seedling production back home”, he said.

Earlier, Dr Abbas and his delegation also toured Raute a globally recognized manufacturer of timber industry equipment based in Lahti.
Raute’s advanced machinery used in timber processing and forest management has set industry standard worldwide.
Raute supplies forestry equipment to countries worldwide, and delegation was introduced to some of the latest innovations in timber processing and forest management.
