Prison officer arrested over fatal shooting in Manyoni

SINGIDA: Police in Singida Region are detaining a prison officer suspected of involvement in the death of a civilian during an outbreak of violence in Manyoni District.

The incident occurred on the night of November 26, 2024, at Stendi Sub-village, where clashes erupted between supporters of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA).

Singida Regional Police Commander (RPC) Amon Kakwale explained in a statement that the violence began after suspected CHADEMA supporters stormed a house where CCM members were holding a meeting.

“Prison officers from a nearby correctional facility responded to the scene but were attacked with stones upon arrival.

In an attempt to disperse the crowd, shots were fired into the air, but one bullet accidentally injured George Juma (41), a CHADEMA candidate for the sub-village,” said RPC Kakwale.

Police have since launched investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for instigating the violence.

RPC Kakwale urged residents to maintain peace and warned against taking the law into their own hands during the ongoing Local Government Elections.

The regional police boss assured the public of the police’s commitment to ensuring security throughout the voting process and during the announcement of results.

The Commander further emphasized that any attempts to disrupt the elections would not be tolerated, adding that those found guilty of causing chaos will face legal consequences.
