President Samia mourns Kitambaa Cheupe’s King

DAR ES SALAAM: President Samia Suluhu Hassan has extended her condolences to Tanzania’s music community following the death of legendary musician Boniface Kikumbi Mwanza Mpango, popularly known as “King Kiki.”

The 77-year-old music icon passed away early Friday at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, where he was receiving treatment.

Through her official X (formerly Twitter) account, President Samia honored King Kiki’s enduring legacy, noting that he entertained fans for more than 50 years and will be remembered for his contributions to Tanzanian music, including the classic hit Kitambaa Cheupe.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, friends, artists, and all music lovers in the country following the death of legendary musician Boniface Kikumbi Mwanza Mpango, ‘King Kiki,’” the Head of State wrote.
President Samia also emphasized that Kitambaa Cheupe, one of King Kiki’s most beloved songs, remains an integral part of Tanzania’s entertainment scene, frequently featured at events and venues nationwide.

“For over 50 years, King Kiki entertained millions of Tanzanians and served as a mentor and teacher to many in the music industry. We will honor his legacy and remember his remarkable contributions, especially his song Kitambaa Cheupe, which continues to resonate across the country,” she added.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Sports, Mr. Gerson Msigwa, also paid tribute to King Kiki through his social media platforms, describing him as a figure who deeply loved Tanzania and its music scene.

“We will cherish your immense contribution to Tanzanian dance music. For many years, you entertained, educated, and inspired, always showing deep love for Tanzania,” the PS remarked.

According to his family, King Kiki passed away after losing his battle with liver cancer.
