President Samia flies to Harare for SADC Summit
DODOMA: President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to leave the country today (Thursday, 15 August 2024), for Harare, Zimbabwe, where she will attend the 44th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit of Heads of State and Governments.
This year’s summit, themed: “Promoting Innovation to Unlock Economic Growth and Sustainable Development Opportunities towards a More Industrialized SADC,” will kick off on Saturday, August 17th.
A State House statement issued on Thursday said President Samia is also expected to be elected as Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

She will take over from Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, who has held the position over the past year.
The Summit brings together leaders from across the 16-member regional bloc will also provide an opportunity for SADC leaders to assess and review progress made in terms of the regions flagship integration agenda, the Regional Strategic Indicative Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030, as well as address matters relating to peace and security in the region.
During the Summit, the Republic of Zimbabwe will assume the Chairpersonship of SADC, taking over from the Republic of Angola, who chaired SADC since the previous Summit held in Luanda, Republic of Angola, in August 2023.
