President Mwinyi lays emphasis on census

ZANZIBAR President Hussein Mwinyi on Monday implored all Zanzibaris to effectively participate in the 2022 National Population and Housing Census slated for today.
Tanzania effective today goes for her sixth population counting since independence with the major aim of getting a thorough understanding of the country’s demographics and living standards.
President Mwinyi, speaking at the receipt of the residential address of the presidential palace in the isles, said the government has declared today an off day to provide all wananchi with an opportunity to participate in the counting.
Dr Mwinyi said he was excited to receive the address, commending the timely completion of the exercise before the start of the 2022 census as the Union President Samia Suluhu Hassan had directed.
President Mwinyi described the census as highly important exercise to the government and all development stakeholders, arguing that the population enumeration provides vital statistics for the government’s various development plans.
“I will personally participate in the census and my hopes are that all Zanzibaris will participate and complete the exercise safely and peacefully,” said the president.
Infrastructure, Communications and Transport Minister Dr Khalid Salum Mohamed, speaking at the event, said hitherto the ministry in collaboration with Tanzania Posts Corporation (TPC) has surpassed the target by installing 451,128 residential addresses in Unguja and Pemba.
He further explained that the successes went parallel with President Samia’s directive to have the exercise completed before the census day.
Dr Khalid said the remaining work is to put sign posts on houses and buildings, noting that 17,000 sign poles are expected to be erected in various streets in Unguja and Pemba.
Various government leaders, including Information, Youth, Culture and Sports Minister Tabia Maulid Mwita and Urban West Regional Commissioner Idrissa Kitwana Mustafa attended the function at which President Mwinyi was handed over the presidential residence address number 78, Urban District, Migombani Ward, Julius Nyerere Road Street.
President Samia launched the residential address operation in the country on February 8, 2022. The operation was later launched in Zanzibar by Second Vice-President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla on February 20, 2022.
