President: Kariakoo collapse among 3 major disasters under my leadership

DAR ES SALAAM: President Samia Suluhu Hassan has described the Kariakoo building collapse as the third major disaster since she assumed office.

Speaking shortly after visiting the scene of the disaster, the Head of State expressed deep concern over the deadly incident.

She also mentioned the Hanang mudslide tragedy in Manyara region and another disaster she did not name as challenging moments her administration has faced.

“I have just arrived here and witnessed the spirit and unity of Tanzanians when we encounter disasters like this. I think this is the third disaster since I assumed power—one in Manyara and another one,” she said.

“This incident happened while I was in Brazil, but I closely monitored the rescue operations and provided guidance. Seeing it firsthand, I must say this disaster is both significant and terrifying. While Tanzania has faced many calamities, this one is particularly tragic,” she added.

The President noted that the collapsed building’s walls clearly showed poor construction management, with cost-cutting measures overlooking long-term risks.

“This incident sends a clear message: the government must inspect the structural integrity of buildings, starting with Kariakoo,” she emphasized.

She reiterated the urgency of taking immediate action to ensure building safety across the country.
