Post-harvest losses open investment opportunities
THE government has called for greater adoption of good agronomic practices to reduce post-harvest losses, while urging the private sector to invest in storage, processing, drying and transport infrastructure, as losses are estimated to reach 40 per cent.
The Director for Crop Development at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Yasinta Nzogela, told the Daily News that the losses are caused by various challenges across the agricultural value chain, including poor farming practices, inadequate transport, drying, processing and storage infrastructure.
“Farmers must improve practices from production and harvesting through transportation and storage to cut losses before produce reaches the market.
“Post-harvest losses reaches 40 per cent, wiping out nearly half of the income farmers could earn from their produce,” she said.
According to the director, the challenge should not be viewed solely as a setback for agriculture, but also as a business opportunity for investors and young people seeking to participate across the value chain.
She identified the shortage of storage facilities, particularly in high-volume cereal-producing areas, as a significant investment opportunity, citing rising production and growing demand for adequate storage capacity.
“This year, maize production has been high, but storage remains a major challenge. Many farmers lack proper storage facilities,” she said.
She urged young people to use available credit facilities to invest in warehouses, transport and produce collection services, helping farmers move crops from production areas to markets.

Better storage, she said, would also reduce pressure on farmers to sell immediately after harvest, often at low prices due to limited storage options.
Dr Nzogela said opportunities also existed in processing and value addition, particularly for rice, cassava and oilseeds, where the government is supporting access to small-scale processing equipment.
Meanwhile, Dr Nzogela said value addition would allow farmers and traders to earn more from their produce rather than relying on sales of raw commodities.
For highly perishable crops such as fruits and vegetables, she identified collection centres, drying facilities, storage and efficient transport as key investment opportunities for reducing post-harvest losses.
She said government is working with the private sector, financial institutions and development partners to improve infrastructure and equip farmers with knowledge to reduce losses across the value chain.
Such investment, Dr Nzogela said, will help cut postharvest losses, increase farmers’ earnings, create jobs and unlock new business opportunities in agriculture.
