Popular politician ‘Babu Duni’ retires, urges peace, stability ahead of polls

ZANZIBAR: JUMA Duni Haji, a prominent Tanzanian politician known as ‘Babu Duni,’ has officially retired from active politics.

At a well-attended farewell reception, ‘Ahsante Babu Duni,’ held at Majid Hall in the Kiembesamaki area of Unguja Urban District, he called on Tanzanians to uphold peace, political stability and unity as the election season approaches.

“We all desire peace. It is a misconception to view the opposition as those who do not value peace,” Babu Duni said. Babu Duni retires after decades of public service, having transitioned into politics in the 1990s.

Throughout his career, he served as a member and leader of various opposition parties, including the Civic United Front (CUF), Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) and the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT)-Wazalendo.

He also held ministerial positions under the Government of National Unity (GNU) since 2010. At the farewell event, speakers from ACT-Wazalendo and enthusiastic supporters praised Babu Duni as a dedicated advocate for democracy, political and human rights.

He was recognised for his collaboration with the late politician Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad. Current ACT-Wazalendo Chairman Mr Othman Masoud Othman, who is also the First Vice President of Zanzibar, joined other party leaders, including Ms Dorothy Semu (Party Leader), Mr Zitto Kabwe (former Party Leader), Mr Is-haka Mchinjita (Deputy Secretary General) and Mr Ismail Jussa (Party Vice Chairman), to honour Babu Duni for his contributions. Party member Mr Ally Saleh highlighted Babu Duni’s commitment and leadership, noting his ability to navigate challenges with respect and dignity.

As part of the farewell tribute, Babu Duni received various gifts, including a car, television set, furniture, home decorations and money from party leaders, executives, members and supporters across the country.
