Police nab three for reckless driving

MOROGORO: IN a bold move to protect road users and combat reckless driving, the Police in Morogoro have arrested three drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol during a heightened road safety operation.
The crackdown aims to make the region’s roads safer and curb the rising number of accidents caused by impaired drivers.
According to a statement issued today by the region’s Acting Police Commander, Mwita Ally (33), Lucas Lwahela (28), and Ahmed Kipozi (39) were apprehended in different locations.
Mwita Ally,was caught driving a Suzuki Escudo (T.458 BDB) in Morogoro Municipality early today.
A breathalyzer test revealed an alcohol level of 510.01 mg/100ml, which is far above the legal limit.
Lucas Lwahela, a long-distance truck driver was arrested at Mpange in Wami Sokoine village, Mvomero District, while en route from Rwanda to Dar es Salaam.
A statement revealed that witnesses reported when they saw his truck with a plate number T117 EBK/T.817 EBL swerving dangerously, prompting police intervention. Tests showed he had an alcohol level of 431.3 mg/100ml.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Kipozi, a physically challenged individual, was found heavily intoxicated while operating a TVS King three-wheeler with a plate number MC.556 AVT without a valid license.
He also had parked in the middle of the Morogoro–Dar es Salaam highway while fallen asleep, a move that caused a major traffic jam that disrupted the movement of traffic. His alcohol level was measured at 246.2 mg/100ml.
“All three drivers were arrested today and are still undergoing legal procedures before being brought to the court,” it stated.
This ongoing road safety campaign serves as a critical reminder to all road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize the safety of themselves and other road users.
Police have reiterated that the road safety operation is ongoing and warned drivers against violating traffic laws, emphasizing that reckless behaviour on the roads will not be tolerated.
