Police impound stolen cars, motor cycles

KAGERA: THE Police Force in Kagera Region have impounded various properties suspected to have stolen including cars, motorcycles and engine boats.
Kagera Regional Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Blasius Chatanda said during a special operation mounted between March and April, this year the police managed to recover about 20 motorcycles, three cars and three engine boats.
The three cars were stolen from a neighbouring Uganda while two suspects were assisting police investigations and 18 suspects were arrested in connection with thefts of the motorcycles and will be arraigned in court when investigations are completed, he said.

He also said three Fisheries Officers (names withheld), have been arrested for allegedly trying to dispose-off the stolen engine boats. SACP Chatanda also highlighted improvements in prosecutions, noting a steady increase in convictions murder -five accused were sentenced to death by hanging while in rape cases five accused received life sentences, and 12 offenders were sentenced to 30 years.
In cases related to sex against the order of nature, one accused was sentenced to life imprisonment, and 2 offenders received 30 years, while two accused were sentenced to 30 years for being in possession of illicit drugs.
Regional Police Commander said the region recorded remarkable progress in reducing crime, thanks to joint efforts between citizens and law enforcement agencies. He attributed the decline to community policing initiatives and continued public education on maintaining law and order.
“Over the past two years, crime rates in Kagera have significantly decreased, largely due to community policing and ongoing education on maintaining law and order,” SACP Chatanda said.
