Police arrest Chemba resident for trafficking illicit drugs

DODOMA: POLICE in Dodoma Region have arrested Omary Bakari, a 45-year-old resident of Chemba District, for allegedly trafficking 148 kilogrammes of khat.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Dodoma Regional Police Commander (RPC) George Katabazi confirmed that the suspect was apprehended on February 4th this year in Chemba, while illegally transporting the narcotic substance.

“The suspect was found in possession of 148 kilogrammes of khat, which he was trafficking in violation of the law,” RPC Katabazi said.

He said that Bakari was using a Mitsubishi Canter truck, registration number T 220 ABF, which contained a hidden compartment designed to conceal the drugs.

In a separate operation, police also arrested Juma Hamza, 27, also known as ‘Jambazi’, along with six others aged between 20 and 30 for their alleged involvement in various criminal activities, including theft, rape, and armed robbery.

“They were responsible for several incidents, including injuring three people. They are part of a known criminal network called ‘Malonjee’,” RPC Katabazi revealed.

He added that investigations are ongoing and legal action will be taken against the suspects.
